SAFFRON + MENย

Training. Recovery. Body composition. Sexual health. And a different conversation around masculinity.
Saffron tends to get talked about in the wellness world through the lens of mood, beauty and womenโs health.
But thereโs another side of the research that deserves attention:
men.
More specifically, researchers have studied saffron in men in relation to resistance training, exercise recovery, body composition, cardiovascular markers, sexual function and psychological wellbeing.
And the findings make saffron a particularly interesting ingredient for the modern definition of male wellness.
01 ย SAFFRON + TRAINING
One small randomized study looked specifically at young, previously untrained men completing resistance training four times per week.
After six weeks, both groups improved muscular enduranceโbut the men combining resistance training with saffron experienced greater improvements in muscular endurance than the placebo + training group. Researchers also observed changes in several neurochemical markers, including dopamine, ฮฒ-endorphin and endocannabinoids, alongside greater improvements in reported happiness. (PubMed)
Thatโs interesting because performance isnโt only about how much weight you can move.
Consistency requires motivation, recovery, enjoyment and the ability to keep showing up.
Saffron isnโt replacing your protein, creatine, progressive overload or sleep.
Think of the research as investigating whether it can support the environment surrounding training.
02 WHAT ABOUT BODY COMPOSITION?
This is where we need to separate interesting preliminary research from hype.
One small clinical study involving 30 non-athletic young men reported differences in body-fat percentage and lean mass when resistance training was combined with saffron compared with resistance training alone. However, the study did not find superior upper- or lower-body strength improvements from adding saffron. (Magiran)
Another six-week resistance-training trial found that adding saffron did not significantly alter body-composition measures compared with training alone. (ScienceDirect)
So:
Can we say saffron builds muscle or burns fat? No.
The research isnโt strong or consistent enough for that.
Can we say researchers have begun investigating saffron alongside resistance training and body composition in men?
Yes. And thatโs much more interesting than pretending the science says something it doesnโt.
03 RECOVERY MATTERS TOO
Training is a stressor.
The adaptation happens when your body is given the resources to recover from it.
In young untrained men, research combining saffron with circuit resistance training has reported effects on certain biochemical markers associated with exercise-induced muscle stress, including a greater reduction in LDH compared with exercise alone. The researchers cautioned that additional studies are needed. (ScienceDirect)
Separate research in older men has also investigated saffron alongside resistance training and found changes in several inflammatory and cardiovascular-risk markers. (PubMed)
Thatโs why we find saffron interesting from a longevity perspective.
Train hard. Recover intentionally. Repeat.
04 DOES SAFFRON BOOST TESTOSTERONE? ๐ย
This one deserves its own section because wellness marketing gets out of control here.
There is not strong clinical evidence that saffron is a testosterone booster.
One study involving 44 healthy young men investigated resistance training with different saffron preparations. Testosterone increased within the training groups, but there was no statistically significant difference in testosterone between groups. Researchers did observe changes in cortisol and the testosterone-to-cortisol ratio in certain groups, but this is nowhere near enough evidence to call saffron a testosterone supplement. (Medical Journal of Tabriz University)
And thatโs okay.
Menโs wellness does not need to be reduced to testosterone.
05 MALE SEXUAL WELLNESS
Hereโs an area where the human evidence gets particularly interesting.
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial studied men with erectile dysfunction taking saffron for six weeks. Erectile-function scores improved significantly compared with placebo. (ScienceDirect)
Earlier systematic reviews and meta-analyses have also found signals suggesting saffron may positively affect aspects of male sexual function, particularly erectile function and sexual satisfaction, although the studies are relatively small and heterogeneous. (PubMed Central (PMC))
A newer 2026 systematic review of herbal supplements for erectile dysfunction similarly identified saffron as one of the supplements associated with improvements in erectile function, orgasmic function and intercourse satisfaction. Importantly, that review did not identify saffron as the ingredient responsible for the testosterone findings. (ScienceDirect)
Male fertility is less clear. Research into semen parameters has produced conflicting results, so claims that saffron improves male fertility would currently go beyond the evidence. (PubMed Central (PMC))
06 PERFORMANCE IS ALSO MENTALโฆ
This might be our favorite part of the conversation.
In a placebo-controlled study of recreationally active adults, researchers didnโt find significant differences across the full study population. But when they analyzed men separately, male participants taking saffron showed greater improvements in exercise enjoyment and heart-rate variability than men receiving placebo. (PubMed)
Itโs preliminary researchโnot proof of a performance effect.
But it raises an interesting idea:
What if supporting performance isnโt always about pushing harder?
Sometimes the things surrounding performance matter too.
Your ability to recover.
Your willingness to train again tomorrow.
Your stress load.
Your relationship with training.
Your sexual wellbeing.
Your mood.
Your ability to actually enjoy the body youโre building.
AND MAYBE THATโS A BETTER DEFINITION OF MASCULINITY.
Masculinity doesnโt have to mean permanently operating at maximum intensity. Masculinity can turn โtoxicโ real quickโฆ
Strength and regulation can exist together.
You can lift heavy and care about recovery.
You can want muscle and care about cardiovascular health.
You can care about sexual health, mental wellbeing and longevity without making any of those things less masculine.
In fact, taking care of the system responsible for everything youโre asking your body to do might be one of the strongest things you can do.
Build strength. Protect your energy. Recover well. Stay capable.
Thatโs longevity, too.

Educational content only. Research on saffron and male performance/body composition remains limited, and findings should not be interpreted as evidence that saffron builds muscle, burns fat, increases testosterone, treats sexual dysfunction or prevents disease. Supplements should complementโnot replaceโtraining, nutrition, sleep or appropriate medical care.
